SYNOPSIS

“We create monsters in our lives. Our response to them determines how our stories unfold. You can choose to cower in fear and ignorance of them, or you can choose to confront them head on, gathering the intuition and courage to defeat them.”

On the Tips of Her Fingers centers around Adela, a young girl leading a seemingly quiet life, whose mother spins beautiful stories for her at night. A series of strange events lead to Adela being gifted with magical abilities allowing her to escape from her world. We travel with Adela far from home where she begins to unravel a family secret, stumbling as she learns to use her powers, navigating difficult situations and her own complex feelings about growing up, and meeting friends, magical creatures, talking animals, and evil villains along the way.

In a world that can seem complicated, Adela shows the reader the importance of perseverance, courage, and a little bit of magic. On The Tips of Her Fingers is a dark fairytale that will inspire fans of fiction, fairytales, and magical realism to grapple with the concepts of escapism and self-identity in a whole new way.

MY REVIEW

On the Tips of Her Finger is a delightful story that reminds us every folk tale that has been passed down from generation to generation are made to fill in our mundane lives with life-learning lessons. Might add a little spice of fantasy in them so that we once can take a break from our reality and drown ourselves in our own form of escapism.

The story starts with a young girl named Adela, who recently discovers about her hidden power ever since the sunlight is completely diminished from the sight. The world is now conquered by darkness as if it’s been swallowed by a black hole. Utilising her power that can transport her from place to place, she is determined to trace the cause of this catastrophe. Along the way, she has met countless characters and stories that correspond to her mother’s bedtime stories. Be it talking animals, dragon, Djinn and many more. Weird, because they’re supposed to be fictional, not to come out in a real-life -- some of them help her while some try messing up her plan in saving the world. To that end, Kerpcar’s take on these folk tales surprise me the most because, in this story, they’re richly steeped in the tradition of passing down stories but Kerpcar successfully brings these characters come alive.

Now, here comes the parts of why I couldn’t rate it any higher than 4. One of them is the writing. For the first few chapters, about 50+ pages in, I actually had a tough time to follow up the story. The writing is sometimes stilted, perhaps due to overwritten description of something that I couldn’t care less about? But then, surprisingly in the middle of the story, I could finally breeze through to the end with ease. Second, the characters. This book has a lot of characters that act as a cameo, maybe it’s a part of the author’s goal to cover all sorts of folk tales in this book. I personally hoped that each of them has their own distinct voice, maybe by this way it will leave a long-lasting impact on readers. However, Adela’s character arc is very well-crafted. I think most readers who once have lost their loved ones could relate with Adela.

Kerpcar tackles about themes of perseverance, dealing with loss of loved ones, and the beauty in believing our own will. It’s a book that has a slow-paced storyline but sprinkled with a spectacular amount of wonder and adventure that will send you reeling. I recommend this book for those who want to read a magical book that can bring them beyond their imagination but still lay in borderline reality.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Bibiana is an alumna of Georgetown University, where she graduated with a degree in Marketing, Management, and Entrepreneurship. She is an immigrant currently residing in Brooklyn, New York. As a child, she loved to read as a method to escape: in addition to helping her cope with challenges, she aimed to take inspiration from the books she loved growing up — ones that explored dark themes and forced characters to struggle, yet allowed them to come out of the experience with a newfound understanding of themselves and the world around them. During the day, Bibiana works in advertising, where she works with talented people to create amazing work. Outside of watching Slovak fairytales every holiday season, she enjoys cuddling up with her kitten and conjuring up fantastical worlds in her imagination.
