I am German, yes, but I am not a Nazi. There's a difference, and one day I hope you understand that.

Summary

An 18 years-old Scottish, Lorna Anderson, has undergone a change in her mundane life when an enemy, or more accurately known as the German POW (prisoner of war), named Paul, is sent to her doorstep. Being a prisoner, he submits himself to carry out the task that is working at her father's farm, tending to lambing shed.

Set in 1945, Scotland, the war (WWII) between the Nazis and the Allied Force is still going on during this period. Therefore, it's normal for Lorna to be appalled at the thought of having a German lad roaming around her house freely while her brothers, Sandy and John, are busy risking their lives for the country. What makes a difference if she were to engage a good relationship with the boy who's a German when her brothers' lives are practically on the line, fighting off his kinds? But as time goes on, Lorna begins to unravel the odds about him. She begins to see the boy behind the soldier.

Review

Never thought I'd found a historical slash YA fiction sitting, untouched, in the shelves of my local public library! This book makes me craving for a nice love story that's innocent yet raw in its own way. It feels so original. Then later I'd read her Author's Note that she has actually written this based on a true event.

The first thought that comes to my mind is that I'd be getting all of those toes-curling just by digesting its synopsis and YES! The fluffiness contained in this story is so adequately addressed. Leech has actually succeeded in that department. What makes it more interesting is that Paul has got half of his face burnt. This unfortunate event has already happened before he is seized by the Allied Force, succumbing himself to a prisoner's fate.

I think the story will sound cliche if his character isn't made into that. It'll make up this story more intriguing with how a scarred face like that can taut a girl's heartstring. Usually, we all know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. How can be possibly Lorna attracted to Paul? This damn curiosity is what keeps me up to continue reading this book. It is rare to find the main male character is on at a disadvantage part when it comes to looks. You can expect by having that scarred face, there'll be so many judgemental stares pining at him, poor boy.

Lastly, the notion of the author merging a forbidden relationship in amidst of an on-going war is really well-delivered. Though the consequences due to having that kind of relationship are kinda predictable, but the storyline is well executed. I'd love to reread this book again! To feel again those experiences; toes-curling, giddy heart and funny things flapping in my tummy.

You can say that I am on a cloud nine right after finishing this book. Even to its last page, I'm fueled with happiness.
